Are Tarot Readers Psychic?

In December I was part of an event at local spiritual shop A Beautiful Soul, giving tarot readings alongside my good friend who does straight psychic readings. Some questions about the nature of tarot readings came up as a result. Are tarot readings different than psychic readings? Do you have to be psychic to read tarot? Can anyone read tarot?

Depending on who you ask, you’ll receive different answers, so today I am answering for myself. First of all, yes, I am a psychic reader. I am an empath and clairsentient (clear feeling). I have clairvoyant and clairaudient capabilities as well, but my most developed psychic skills are the clairsentient and empathic. These are most natural and consistent for me in everyday, walking around life. When reading tarot, my clairaudient capabilities kick into high gear and enhance the rest. I do ask for guidance from Goddess, and from spirit guides, and faeries, to assist in the readings I give.

What is the difference between tarot readings and psychic readings?

Tarot readings are different than psychic readings in that psychic readings by themselves are simply the psychic channeling information and images through themselves, whereas tarot is a tool I use to ground the reading. I channel information through myself and the tarot cards. I love having a focal point to my readings, and I love the interaction of having clients pull the cards and look at the same images I am looking at while I read for them.

So, tarot readings are different (for me) than straight psychic readings in that I prefer to use the tool of tarot when channeling psychic information.

Do you have to be psychic to read tarot?

The short answer is no. I know many people who aren’t psychic who read tarot. Many use tarot for self-reflection, with a more psychology-based approach. Many use it for coaching. There are as many different views of how Tarot works as there are tarot readers. Most would say that although you don’t have to be psychic, you do need to learn to listen to your intuition. Tarot is often a tool that, when first learned, teaches a reader how to trust themselves.

Can anyone read tarot?

My honest opinion: No. You have to be willing to dedicate the time and energy to really learn this divination system, and learning to be a proficient reader is a much different process than learning in a traditional format (like how you learn things in school). You can memorize definitions, but that doesn’t mean that you can actually read the cards. It’s a skill and art form that is not a fit for everyone, just as not everyone can cook, or garden, etc.

In Conclusion…

I hope this cleared up any confusion there may have been about psychic readings & tarot readings. If you’re in the market for a reading and aren’t sure the reader’s style fits what you’re looking for: just ask.

By the by, I will be at A Beautiful Soul every Friday beginning next Friday for walk ins or appointments. You can stop in for a 20 minute, 30 minute, or 60 minute reading. You can also schedule anytime!

    1. With empathic/clairsentient abilities, I have to distinguish what’s mine and what’s from others peoples’ in terms of energies and feelings. Now I can tell if anxiety is my own or if it’s actually someone else’s so that I can send the energy away. But when I didn’t understand or know how to use my gifts, coupled with traumatic life experiences I hadn’t worked though, I was always anxiety ridden.

      1. I get anxiety but I’m,not sure. If its mine or from other people the whole empathy thing, I was told I have the gift but I don’t really know, I never get a straight answer its frustrating.

      2. It’s hard with the feeling of anxiety because one of its trademarks is that it already feels like it’s coming out of no where most of the time. I wrote another post specifically about being an empath and the trademark of this ability is clairsentience. Being an empath is literally taking other peoples pain, illness, emotions, etc into your own body and for the untrained empath it’s almost impossible to tell if it’s your own or someone else’s.

      3. i am going to read your post on that… thats the part where i struggle.. i ihave a post about my anxiety.. it just came out of no where. right after my grandmother died.. i read somewhere that when someone dies they can push there energy into a person. i know another medium her grandson died and all of a sudden she had the gift of being a medium.. what do you think about stuff with that?

      4. I’m sorry for your loss of your grandmother. 🙁 Are you sure your anxiety isn’t related to what you’ve been going through?

I don’t agree that when someone dies they push their energy into a person. Their energy transforms when they die. When someone in your family dies they become an ancestor even if they are younger than you. Being able to hear from your own family members from beyond the veil is something we all have the ability to experience and doesn’t necessarily indicate a spiritual gift. But, sometimes traumatic experiences can open a person to a dormant gift they have too.

      5. Sorry I just now saw this msg I’m still learning how this site works, my mom also passed away last year made it little worse for me. I think my anxiety is a mental break down I’ve had so many fake mediums telling me all sorts of things just wish 1 person be real with me I read the link u sent me too pretty informative about empath

  1. Thank you for your post! I can speak for myself, and say that I am a tarot reader but I am definitely not psychic. My Grandmother is extremely psychic and clairvoyant so I have some reference. Tarot to me, is about letting the cards explain what is happening / what will happen,, because,, I am not psychic and I can’t tell for myself. Great post!

  2. Excellent article, I am a psychic, tarot, angel card reader and also clairvoyant with many abilities. I also help others develop. Yes I believe tarot readers are psychic as when doing the cards we pick up on clairvoyant images at times. Well I know I do, but also if you are just starting out with tarot then using the cards can help with your psychic abilities.
