Let’s take a little walk through the Minor Arcana and consider the messages of self-care enclosed within. There will be four parts to this series, one part for each suit of the minor arcana, amounting in 40 self-care prompts for different aspects of your being. You could even call it a 40 day self-love challenge. The point is for you to consider how you can stoke and direct your own inner power through presence, awareness, and love.
The first in this series is the suit of Wands. This suit deals with loving yourself more by pursuing what makes your heart sing, but also staying in balance. This is a suit of creative, confident action to expand your life.
You have to balance the fire energy with the other elements. It’s fantastic energy for accomplishing your dreams, recognizing your own inner desires, and taking action. But you can’t be taking action all the time.
Feel free to adapt your own ideas that spring to mind, and to take it one day at a time, or in true fire fashion take on many in a day. I don’t care, it’s up to you, but watch that you don’t burn out.
Ace of Wands: What are some creative or adventurous endeavors you’ve always wanted to do? Have you wanted to take painting classes, or sky dive, or dance? Pick a creative, fun idea and go do it. Seriously, like right now. Sign up for the class, go out dancing, write a poem. There are no limits here, so don’t worry about whether or not this endeavor fits any particular category of creativity. What idea makes your toes tingle and your heart race? Go do that thing. You’ll be happy you did.
Two of Wands: Fire grows when you give it space to breathe. Write out in great detail what you would like your life to be like a year from now. What do you want to change? What do you want more of in your life? How do you want to feel? What new experiences do you want to have? Get it down paper.
Three of Wands: All those things you want to do for yourself require action. Write down what steps you’re willing to take to bring the changes of the Two of Wands into being. Take those steps. What is distracting you and sucking up the energy that you could be putting toward these changes? Stop giving those distractions the time of day.
Four of Wands: Throw yourself a party! You don’t need a reason to celebrate other than the fact that you are you. Buy yourself some flowers, give yourself some snaps. You’ve done a lot in your life. You’ve overcome and persevered endlessly. Inhale the joy and miracle that is your life and let loose!
Five of Wands: Sometimes fire energy makes us crabby. We get a little impatient. So the challenge here is to avoid expending this energy on arguments and strife and instead, channel it into creative action. When a problem comes along, you must whip it- the problem, not the person involved (whether it’s just you or others). If there is a problem person in your life, how can you constructively deal with them? Be honest. If they’re not healthy for you, time to direct your energy elsewhere.
Six of Wands: Victory! Seriously though, pick out one thing in your life that you feel has been your greatest victory. Consider how it has changed you. Consider how you can use this experience to help and lead others and how the knowledge of what you’ve accomplished can fuel your confidence. I mean, look at what you did and how amazing it is. You were probably afraid, but you did it anyway. You’ve done it once, you can do it again. What do you really want to accomplish next? Believe that you can do it!
Seven of Wands: Surround yourself with people who support your dreams. You don’t need wet blankets trying to smother your flame. You are starlight and love, and all the dreams in your heart are their own indication that you can accomplish them. In other words, Goddess doesn’t give us dreams that we can’t achieve. If you don’t have people who support you, it’s ok to go it alone. Trust that the support you need will arrive when you need it.
Eight of Wands: Take a risk! The only way to make your dreams a reality is to step out of your comfort zone. Recognize that there is nothing standing in your way and take that first step, even though it’s scary. Let your intuition guide you along with faith in yourself. What is the first step you need to take? Take that step.
Nine of Wands: This message here is akin to keeping the hearth going. Let yourself rest a little, let the fire within slow burn without going out. You can’t always be going, going, or else you will burn out. Learning your limits is essential to a healthful and happy life. You’ve put tons of effort in, but you have to let the universe respond. Where in your life have you been pushing too hard? Direct that energy elsewhere for a while.
Ten of Wands: What do you need to take off of your plate so that you’re not carrying too much? What commitments sound fun but aren’t actually good for you? Practice not saying “yes” right away. Instead, say “I’ll check my book” and then actually do it so that you know whether or not any new responsibility or activity will just become a burden over time and whether or not it will interfere with any other needs you have. Where in your life do you need more fire, and where do you need to slow down?
