Welcome to Free Spirit Friday, a weekly segment where I interview a different artist until I run out of people to interview. If you would like to be featured on Free Spirit Friday, send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
This week, I’ve interviewed Dave Wilson of Root River Jam! Check them out on Facebook!
Tell us a bit about yourself!
I grew up in SE MN and my father was a veterinarian in Preston, MN. I’ve been playing guitar and singing most of my life. My mother taught me how to sing melody and harmony for church events and my brother, Chuck, was a big influence with my guitar playing. I’ve been a singer/songwriter (mainly with acoustic guitar) for approximately 10 years.
What kind of music do you make?
I write in the progressive “Americana” folk rock genre! I like adding some improv as well.
What draws you to it?
I like expressing my inner thoughts and feelings through music. It is what makes me a whole person.
What has been your favorite experience as a musician?
Playing “Live” and using my band’s improvisational skills to express and create music.
What is your dream gig?
I would like to play a live interview on “The Current” MPR someday!
Who or what has influenced you most?
I was influenced by a wide range of genres. I think The Beatles had a big part in my singing and playing. And I listened to Dire Straights alot too. Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, Joe Satriani, have all been big influences.
What kind of community-driven projects would you like to be part of?
I want to continue to help the C4 group grow by bringing visual artists and audio artists together, as well as actors and spoken word artists. I want to collaborate and be part of growing the Rochester art scene.
What would you like to see happen in the Rochester music scene?
To have more venues do concerts, shows and events that give different artists and bands a chance to play the same show.
